Summer Learning
Summer Learning
At St. Louise Parish School, we believe summer is a wonderful time for rest, family adventures, and creating lasting memories. It is also an important opportunity to keep young minds engaged and continue building the academic skills developed throughout the school year. Research shows that students can lose significant academic ground over the summer months without regular practice. With a little consistency, students can return in the fall feeling confident, prepared, and ready to learn.
Required summer assignments and optional learning resources are linked throughout this page.
Summer Bridge Workbooks (Grades 1–8)
All students entering grades 1–8 will receive a Summer Bridge workbook at the end of the school year. These workbooks provide a structured way to review key concepts from the previous grade level while introducing skills that will support success in the year ahead. Students are encouraged to work steadily throughout the summer, completing a few pages each week rather than waiting until August.
Summer Reading (Grades K–8)
Daily reading is encouraged for all students. Reading regularly helps students maintain comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills while fostering a lifelong love of learning.
Students entering grades K–5 should review our Summer Reading Guide, which includes reading tips, suggested activities, and recommended book lists to help make reading an enjoyable part of their summer routine. Click HERE for the Summer Reading Guide.
Students entering grades 6–8 are required to complete their assigned summer reading and accompanying assignment before returning to school in September. Click HERE for the Middle School Summer Reading Assignment.
Summer Math (Grades 1–8)
The math practice included in each student's Summer Bridge workbook is designed to reinforce foundational skills and help prevent the "summer slide." In addition to the workbook activities, families may choose to utilize online resources such as Khan Academy and Big Ideas Math for additional review and enrichment.
Some teachers may also provide supplemental math practice or assignments specific to their grade level.
Summer Typing (Grades 3–7)
Students entering grades 3–7 are required to complete their summer typing assignment using Typing Club. Students should complete a minimum of 300 minutes of typing practice over the summer and record their progress on their Typing Map.
The completed Typing Map must be returned at the beginning of the school year and will serve as the student's first technology grade of the 2026–27 school year. Click HERE for the Summer Typing Assignment.
Thank you for partnering with us to support your child's growth throughout the summer. A balance of learning, reading, exploration, and family time helps ensure students return to school ready for a successful year ahead.
