Art
During the year, students in grades K - 8 will experience a variety of mediums while continuing to expand and explore the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. Each assignment will consist of age appropriate objectives that help students develop and understand the different elements and principles. The Elements of Art include: line, shape, form, space, color, value and texture. The Principles of Design include: balance, contrast, movement/rhythm, pattern, emphasis, harmony/unity, variety and proportion.
Projects will incorporate a wide selection of materials and students will have the opportunity to create both 2D and 3D art. Students will also have the opportunity to work individually on assignments as well as in partners and group situations. I can’t wait to have the kids experience charcoal, oil pastel, watercolors, acrylic, printmaking, metal, canvas, pen and ink, crayon, markers, clay and tempera paints. It is going to be a colorful year!
Art historical content and aesthetics will also be introduced through each of the assigned projects. For all grade levels, art assignments are graded and expected to be completed in a timely manner by the individual student. Students are encouraged to share their work with their classmates and discuss his/her art making process. I also hope they bring this excitement home and continue to share their artistic process and experience with parents as well.
I look forward to working with St. Louise students and watching their creativity blossom over the course of the year.

General Learning Objectives for Kindergarten - 8th Grade
- Students will create projects that highlight the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. They will learn proper skills using a wide variety of art materials and tools in the art room.
- Historic and contemporary artist appreciation will be incorporated into multiple lessons throughout the year. Art vocabulary and techniques will be introduced and then expanded upon for each grade level.
- Artists will be graded on the following ideals: Understands and applies art knowledge and skills in visual arts and Demonstrates responsible behavior, positive participation, and completion of assignments.
Kindergarten/ 1st Grade
- Identify colors on the Color Wheel including Primary, Secondary, Warm and Cool colors. Practice color mixing using Primary colors.
- Identify and draw geometric shapes. Recognize patterns and types of lines.

2nd / 3rd Grade
- Identify colors on the Color Wheel including Primary, Secondary, Warm, Cool, Neon, Pastel and Neutral colors.
- Practice color mixing to create Secondary colors and brown.
- Discover and draw 3D forms. Recognize types of balance in art.
- Demonstrate drawing proper proportions in the human face.

6th / 7th/ 8th Grade
- Demonstrate intentional artistic choices while mixing and using colors schemes.
- Work independently or in collaboration with others.
- Explore unique compositional layouts. Use size, placement and overlapping to create the illusion of depth.
