Curriculum Overview:
6th grade math is an important step towards the high school curriculum, wherein we explore the building blocks of algebra, geometry and statistics. Specifically, we cover the following topics in the Big Ideas Math curriculum:
- Numerical Expressions and Factors
- Fractions and Decimals
- Ratios and Rates
- Precents
- Algebraic Expressions and Properties
- Equations
- Area, Surface Area, and Volume
- Integers, Number Lines, and the Coordinate Plane
- Statistical Measures
- Data Displays
Our 7th graders add a layer of complexity to what they learned in 6th grade by exploring an algebraic style of computing and analyzing the world around them. In our Big Ideas Math curriculum, we cover the following:
- Adding and Subtracting Rational Numbers
- Multiplying and Dividing Rational Numbers
- Expressions
- Equations and Inequalities
- Ratios and Proportions
- Precents
- Geometric Shapes and Angles
- Surface Area and Volume
In 8th Grade, our students take high school-level Algebra, setting themselves up to excel in their high school math curriculum. Over the course of the year, our Big Ideas Learning curriculum covers the following topics:
- Solving Linear Equations
- Solving Linear Inequalities
- Graphing Linear Functions
- Writing Linear Functions
- Solving Systems of Linear Equations
- Exponential Functions and Sequences
- Polynomial Equations and Factoring
- Graphing Quadratic Functions
How classes are divided:
As things are currently structured, we split each grade level into standard and accelerated classes, teaching the same curriculum at different paces. The goal of this is to prepare all students for advanced placement in high school.

In order to ensure the continued success of our students, St. Louise teachers regularly review and assess mastery of basic mathematical skills from previous years. Additional support is provided in weekly morning sessions with our math specialist, Mr. Ostrander. St. Louise students can expect the opportunity to participate in several different math competitions throughout the archdiocese.
