Welcome to our Reading Specialist page!  I support the students in grades K-4 in their reading skills, particularly in the areas of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.  I use the Journeys reading program as well as other intervention materials.  I work with small groups of learners throughout the day, either in the classroom or in reading room up on the 2nd floor.  I also incorporate writing skills, often in response to the literature we're reading. We assess all K-3 students at the beginning of the year to determine students who could benefit from extra support in reading.  Please feel free to e-mail me if you have questions.  It's going to be a great year!

Questions to ask to check comprehension

Hi!  At Curriculum Night, I was asked how to check to make sure your child is understanding the book he/she is reading.  Here are some questions you could ask:
--Where there any words you didn't know the meaning of?
--Where and when does the story take place?
--Who are the main characters?  Tell me about them.
--Who is your favorite character?  Why?
--Which part of the book do you like best?
--How do you feel about the end of the story?
--What do you remember most about the story?
--Do you think others would like to read this book?  Why or why not?
--Would you read another book by this author?  Why or why not?

These questions will give you a good idea of your child's comprehension of the book.  Happy reading!!

Curriculum Night Thank You!

Thanks for coming to Curriculum Night!  Some of you asked for resources for good books for your children as well as ways to check book levels.  Below please find links for book lists as well as book level systems.  Also, don't forget--our St. Louise School Library has some great links for book lists as well!  Check them out!  Thanks for your support and interest in your child's education!
